The high- to late-romantic wind quintet was composed in 1943. The 3rd movement is composed of variations on "Chant de la Creuse" from "18 Pièces brèves" by César Franck. The concluding fugue part of the final movement picks up this theme again. Thus a brad themaic bridge is constructed in an impressive manner.
The composer later reworked the wind quintet as a concert sonata for two pianos op.10. This version is also available here.

The movements:
I     Allegro moderato [6' 20"]
II    Scherzo [4' 45"]
III   Variations on a theme by César Franck [5' 10"]
VI   Finale [6' 20"]

The only obvious and previously known concept of the Préludes op. 28 by Frédéric Chopin is the way through the circle of fifths similar to Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. On the other hand, Chopin's authentic notes on the pieces, which give a new and intimate insight into the mood and intention under which he composed the individual préludes, are generally unknown. The knowledge of these annotations, which can be understood as thematic surtitling, now enables the interpreter, to a much greater degree than before, to empathize, to reflect on and to pass on to the listener the mood underlying the individual preludes in their phase of creation.

Chopin shared these deeply personal notes on the Préludes with his pupil, assistant and intimate friend Karol Mikuli (1821-1897), who at the time was considered the the most authentic Chopin interpreter par excellence. In the succession of other generations of students, in which the knowledge of these remarks was carried on, are such famous names as Raoul Koczalski (1884-1948), Edwin Fischer (1886-1960) and Wilhelm Kempff (1895-1991).
