In the 1932 romance "Taj Mahal" for violin and piano, the composer was inspired by the aesthetics of the Indian tomb of the same name. Like the building made of white marble, the delicate, restrained theme symbolizes the supernatural love for the dead beloved. The silent sweetness of remembrance is increasingly compounded by the surge of pain over the irretrievable loss.

Around the same time, a novel of the same name for voice and piano op. 51 was composedas an independent work.
