In the 1932 written romance "Taj Mahal" for voice and piano, the composer is inspired by the aesthetics of the Indian tomb of the same name. Like the building made of white marble, the delicate, restrained theme symbolizes the spiritual love for the dead beloved. But like "a tear that became marble," the building is at the same time the expression of a painful loss.
